Below is the weekly schedule that each mentor location will follow this year. There are 16 regular weekly sessions per location, in addition to optional Saturday activities. Week 2: October 28th-30th | Intro to Architecture
Learning goals:
What does the path to becoming an architect look like (education, degree, licensure, etc.)?
What does a “day-in-the-life” of an architect look like?
What does the design process look like on a typical project?
What is programming, bubble diagramming, and massing and why are they important?
What are the basic vocabulary and tools used by architects?
Which of your mentors practice architecture?

Week 3: November 4th-6th | Intro to Construction
Learning goals:
What types of jobs are available in construction (project managers, superintendents, estimators, trades, safety officers, etc.), and what does a general contractor do?
What education and licensure requirements are there for construction-related careers?
What does the construction process look like on a typical project?
What does a "day-in-the-life" of a construction professional look like?
Top 3 concerns of a general contractor: safety, schedule, budget

Week 4: November 11th-13th | Intro to Engineering
Learning goals:
Where do projects come from and how do companies/owners decide what they will build?
What are typical design priorities of owners/clients, and what is important to your company?
How do owners choose construction and design teams? How do they work together?
Are there any specific principles of sports design or large event management we should think about as we work on our projects?
Does your facility have any part in the World Cup next summer or have you hosted any other large events that we can learn from?

Week 5: November 18th-20th | Meet the Owner
Learning goals:
Where do projects come from and how do companies/owners decide what they will build?
What are typical design priorities of owners/clients, and what is important to your company?

Are there any specific principles of sports design or large event management we should think about as we work on our projects?

What are construction documents and why are they important?
What information do construction documents include and how are they organized?
How do you read construction documents?
What is the difference between a plan view, elevation view, section view, etc.?
What is a scale and why is it important to use with construction documents?

Week 7: December 9th-11th | Visualization & Modeling
Learning goals:
How do architects, engineers, and contractors use technology and modeling to communicate?
What types of modeling and visualization techniques are used in the industry?
What types of software are used to create models? What does BIM mean? How does Sketch-Up work?
How and why do architects build physical models, and what materials and techniques do they use to create them?
How do models develop as design evolves? (massing models, parti diagrams, BIM, clash detection, renderings, etc.)

What are different kinds of engineering building systems and how do they work together?
How are structural systems designed to keep buildings standing and what do structural engineers do?
How are MEPT systems designed to keep buildings comfortable and functional and what do MEPT engineers do?
